Address bar
In Internet Explorer there is a bar at the top of the page, where you can type the web address of the website you want to visit.
Attachment
A document that you attach to an e-mail. Such as an image file, Word document, etc.
Auto Adjust
You can use this feature in Photo Gallery to automatically adjust the brightness, contrast and colors in a photograph.
BMP
Short for “bitmap files”. You can save your photograph as a BMP file. A BMP file usually has a higher quality, but the size of the file can be large. You also cannot edit a BMP file in Photo Gallery.
Brightness
The overall light level of a photograph. You can adjust the level of light with the brightness and contrast settings in Photo Gallery.
Buzzer
You can send a buzzing sound to your contact. The Windows Live Messenger window will then vibrate a bit.
Chat
Talking to each other by sending each other typed messages.
Color temperature
You can use this feature in Photo Gallery to change the overall tone of a picture. You can make the picture appear warmer (red) or cooler (blue).
Contact
This is a friend you have added to your Windows Live Messenger contact list.
Contact sheet
Sheet with a grid of 35 "thumbnail" pictures. The name of the file is listed below each thumbnail.
Contrast
The difference between the brightest and darkest parts of an image. You can change the exposure of a photo by changing the brightness and contrast of a photo.
Control Panel
You can use the Control Panel to make adjustments to your Windows settings.
Copying
Moving files to another folder. When you copy a file, the original file will still remain in the old folder.
Deleted,
Deleted items
This is the folder where all the deleted messages are moved. When you empty this folder, the deleted messages are removed for good.
Desktop
The Windows main screen. You can change the colors, and background image of the desktop yourself in the Personalize settings.
Directory
A directory page contains a list of websites organized by topics and categories.
Download
Save something to your computer's hard drive.
DPI
Dots Per Inch. A standard measure used to measure screen and printer resolution. For instance, DPI means the number of dots that the printer can print per inch. A greater number of dots per inch means that the picture will have a better quality.
Edition
Sometimes a computer program will be replaced by a new edition (or version) of the program. This means the program has changed and has been improved.
E-mail
A message sent from one computer to another by means of the Internet.
E-mail address
You need this address to use your e-mail program. You can always tell an e-mail address by the @-sign.
Exposure
Brightness and contrast of a photo.
Emoticon
A small image that you can insert into your message. You can use this image to express your mood (for instance, a smiley).
File
Everything you save to your computer is saved in a file.
Folder
A location on your computer where files are saved. Compare this to a folder in a file cabinet where documents are stored.
Folder window
In this window you can view and change folders and files.
Gadget
Small programs that appear on the Windows Sidebar.
GIF
You can save your photo as a GIF file. This file type is often used for drawings on the Internet. You cannot use Photo Gallery to import or edit GIF files.

Inbox
This folder contains all of the e-mail messages you have received.
Information Pane
Area in Windows Photo Gallery where you can find more information about a selected picture or video.
Install
Putting a program on the hard drive of your computer.
Internet
Computers all over the world, all connected to each other.
JPG / JPEG
You can save your photo as a JPG file. This file type is the standard file type in Windows Photo Gallery. A JPG file is a small and easy to use file.
Keyword
Word that you type in the Search box of a search engine. The search engine will then find all the websites that contain this keyword.

Navigation Pane
Area in Photo Gallery where you can see folders and tags.
Offline
Not connected to the Internet.
Offline
Connected to the Internet.
Paint
Program you can use to edit digital photographs and add text. Paint can also be used to make drawings.
Parental Permission
For young children, permission from a parent may be necessary in order to access certain files or to perform particular actions, such as creating a new e-mail address.
Password
A secret word that is needed to open a program or to log on to a website, for instance your webmail program.
Pixel
The pixel is the basic unit of programmable color on a computer display or in a computer image.

Red eyes
Sometimes the people in your pictures have red eyes. This is caused by using the camera flash. You can try to remove red eyes in Photo Gallery by using the Fix Red Eye tool.
Resolution
The amount of detail in a photograph. The number of pixels in the image tells you the resolution. A higher number of pixels means a higher resolution.
Review pane
Here you can read the contents of your message without opening the message in a separate window.
Saturation
In Photo Gallery you can adjust the saturation of a photograph. This means you can change how vivid the colors appear.
Screensaver
An animated image that appears on your desktop when you have not used your computer for a while.
Scroll bar
Sometimes you see just a small part of the web page on your screen. By using the scroll bar you can scroll up and down to view the rest of the page.
Search engine
Website that you can use to find information on the Internet. By typing one or more keywords you can search for websites that have the information you want.
Secret answer
When you have forgotten your password, you are often asked to answer a question. You are the only person who knows the answer to this question. If you answer correctly, you will be able to open for example, your Windows Live Hotmail account.
Selecting
Clicking a file or folder in order to do something with it, for example moving it.
Sent, Sent items
A copy of every message you send is saved in the Sent items folder.
Shortcut
A small picture (also known as an icon) that represents a program. When you double-click this picture the program opens.
Slideshow
An automatic full screen display of images, one after the other.
Status
By using the status in Windows Live Messenger you can show others if you want to chat. You can choose the 'Online' status when you want to chat. If you do not want to chat, you can choose the 'Away' or 'Busy' status.
Store
Save something to your computer.
Tag
Words that can be added to your pictures and videos. A tag will help you find your pictures more quickly.
Thumbnail image
A very small image of a photograph. A thumbnail shows you a preview of the larger picture.
TIF / TIFF
You can save your photo as a TIF file (sometimes called TIFF file). A TIF file has very good quality. You can use Photo Gallery to import and edit TIF files.
Tint
With the feature Tint you can remove the color cast from a photo in Photo Gallery. You do this by adding or removing green.
USB port
A slot on your computer where you can insert a USB stick.
USB stick
You can use a USB stick to store files. Then you can copy these files to another computer. You can also use a USB stick to save an extra copy of your files.
User name
The name you use when working with your computer.
Video call
A conversation with a contact, using a video and a sound connection.
Virus, computer
virus
A nasty computer program, designed to mess up your computer.
Web address
The unique address that identifies a website. Also called the URL.
Webcam
Small camera which you can connect to your computer. With a webcam you can send video images over the Internet.
Webmail
A web-based e-mail service which enables you to access e-mail from any computer connected to the Internet.
Website
A collection of pages on the Internet.
Window
A rectangular box or screen on your computer, in which programs and content appear.
Windows Live Hotmail
A popular webmail program. Also called Hotmail or Live Hotmail.
Windows Live ID
This is just another name for a Windows Live Hotmail address.
Windows Live Messenger
A program you can use to chat, or to start a video call.
Windows Mail
The e-mail program used in Windows Vista.
Windows Photo Gallery
A Windows Vista program you can use to view and edit your photos.
Windows Sidebar
A bar on the right side of your desktop. The Windows Sidebar contains small programs. These programs are called gadgets.
Wink
A funny little animation that you can send to your contacts. You can insert a wink into your message.
Wizard
Program that guides you through a procedure in a series of windows. Each window provides instructions on what to do next.
